"Everything you saw that was Unreal Engine (including) Gears of War was all running real-time in Unreal Engine 3." - CliffyB on G4TV discussing the Gears of War E3 Trailer
At the heart of every great piece of gaming software is a great gaming engine. Epic's Unreal Engine has provided many developers with the platform and tools to develop cutting-edge gaming projects. Titles such as Advent Rising, Unreal Championship 2, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and many others have benefited from the power that the Unreal Engine has to offer.
Now the next generation of UE is upon us, and one of the first titles to harness the power of Unreal Engine 3 will be none other than Gears of War. Every image, every in-game footage, everything we have seen thus far from Gears has been powered by UE3 for the Xbox 360.
Gears of War will be just one of many titles on the Xbox 360 that will use UE3 technology. This spring Microsoft Game Studios signed on to use UE3 to develop titles on the Xbox 360, many others are onboard as well. It is shaping up to be an Unreal year. Now let us take a look at what this engine has been used to create as our multi-part Gears of War feature continues as we take a closer look at the Brumak.
Gears of War: Know Your Enemy - Part III
Brumak
"Beasts make for a much scarier foe than do vehicles. They also serve to underscore the more organic and genetically engineered nature of the Locust Horde. Armour and weaponry are harnessed to avoid any unintentional cybernetic feel." - Gears of War: Destroyed Beauty
Height: 12+ meters
Weight: 10,000 kilograms
Tactical: Gargantuan monstrosities. DNA analysis indicates these were bred by the Locust Horde by smaller native apes. Extraordinary thick hide. Deadly at close range. Recommend blasting them with high-yield explosives from a safe distance.
Special Note: Drone-mounted armoured variations have been reported. Rumours of Brumak carrying energy cannon(s) cannot be confirmed.
SUPERGHOST's Take: I see some fairly obvious observations in our report. Deadly at close range, gotcha. Use high yield explosives from a safe distance, check. I am not planning on getting too close to these bad boys. Oh, and as far as the unconfirmed reports of the Brumak carrying energy cannons, consider them confirmed.
Next week: The Berserker's rage!
