What is the main sound and music direction in Prince of Persia The Two Thrones (POP T2T)?
Our ambition with POPT2T is to close the Sands of Time trilogy with a bang: a very climatic and epic final. This direction is also conveyed through our musical choices: we wanted a very epic soundtrack with both a Hollywood and an oriental feel to it. In that respect, we chose to work with two very gifted composers: Stuart Chatwood and Inon Zur. Stuart Chatwood has already worked on POPSOT and on POPWW while Inon Zur has scored some of the cinematics music from WW.
The player will be deeply immersed in an epic storyline, which calls for large, dramatic passages. In that respect, Inon Zur has conducted the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra to record some of the game cinematics' music. It brings a lot of warmth to the score.
How did you work with these two composers?
Simon Pressey, Artistic Audio Director for POPT2T: "The combination of Stuart's music that is laced with unforgettable melody and in the pocket ethnic groove, and Inon's turn-on-a dime powerfully descriptive orchestration is making this the soundtrack that I've always wanted for the series. The collaboration between them has been wonderful with selfless exchange of ideas which makes for the sum being greater than the parts. I hope everyone enjoys the music as much as I am!"
What about the sound atmosphere in the game?
We wanted the player to feel and hear the war raging in Babylon and thus we paid specific attention to all the ambient audio that will surround the player. You'll hear the sound and voices of enemies fighting, projectile weapons impacting or even sounds of the oppressed people of Babylon who are being forced to the streets. It will contribute to immerse the player in the game and in the overall story.
Can we expect different music and sound for the Prince and the Dark Prince?
Yes, the audio will emphasize the duality of the Prince, who is possessed by the Dark Prince in this third episode.
First, the voice acting will be different: we chose Yuri Lowenthal as the Prince and Rick Miller to play the Dark Prince. Yuri is well known by the fans of the franchise as he was already the voice of the Prince in POPSOT. The Prince and the Dark Prince will be speaking to each other throughout the game. This narrative technique will enable us to further the story and develop their sometimes uneasy relationship. The player will get to know more about their personalities thanks to these inner dialogues.
Secondly, the ambient audio and music will change depending on whether you play the Prince or the Dark Prince and depending on your style of play: for instance whether you play using Speed Kill or using Free Form Fighting. The audio is tied to our AI system and will closely follow the player's actions.
As for the duality in our musical choices, we've used more warm orchestral sound for the Prince and more synthetic sounds for the Dark to reflect their very different personalities.
