| On Wednesday evening we ventured over to O'Neills Irish pub located on Euston Road, London. We met up with representatives from the International Games Developers Association - IGDA, alongside a number of executives from Mary-Margaret.com and Sony. Whilst numerous developers, press and general members of the public gathered in the smokey dim-lighted room above the main pub - George Bain (Developer Support Manager, SCEE Technology Group) was preparing his presentation on how we could get involved and begin developing for the Playstation 3. Shortly after 7pm the presentation began and George Bain went into detail on the Playstation 3 technical specifications and the new development tools. The aim of the presentation was to provide those in the crowd a good insight into how they could potentially get involved in Playstation 3 development, pitch game concept ideas to Sony and provide with information on the type of support developers based in the PAL region can expect from the SCEE Technology Group. "With great power comes' great responsibility" The presentation covered the various uses for the highly impressive multi-core Cell technology which is now the end product of five years worth of collaboration between Sony, IBM and Toshiba. Information pertaining to the technical specifications of the Cell processor was released back in August 2005. To us it seems as if Sony's strategy is now aimed at fully encompassing the Cell's architecture among all of Sony's future electronic product range... this can only be good news for those of you interested in turning your home into a digital bliss of games, music and movies. Briefly some of the images on PowerPoint slides grabbed the audiences attention as we viewed pictures from some of the Playstation 3 launch titles such as The Getaway and Unreal Championship 2007, but we will have to wait until this years E3 Expo until we learn anything new about Sony's next-generation intentions. After the presentation we were able to take part in a Q&A session with George Bain which worked out well as a couple of people won a Sony goodie bags for asking top questions. Even though a number of people quizzed Bain on the 'Playstation Hub' and the official release date for the PS3, he politely declined to answer the questions by saying Sony has yet to make a final business decision on those issues and stated the usual company by-line of "Sony does not comment on rumours or speculation". However, DevStation 2006 is due to take place in roughly two weeks time and developers among the industry will be able to find out a whole lot more on Sony's plans for the next-generation Playstation 3 and its online network service.
